Memorial Day Essentials!

Who is excited for Memorial Day Weekend?! I know I am! Four days off, warm sunshine, bare skin, drinks, friends and family- who can argue. Everyone loves this weekend because its the start of summer, and everyone is getting their fresh air on! Whether your sitting by the pool, cruising on a boat, or having a good old fashioned BBQ in the backyard, make sure you have a comfortable outfit on. A leisurely chic day that leaves you feeling weightless and comfortable is key! I can’t tell you how a great outfit will make your weekend that much better. Below is my list of key outfits and pieces that your Memorial Weekend can’t live without!

Here in Milwaukee it is going to be on the chillier side- so my go to outfit is as easy and casual as it gets! This is perfect for during the day and at night, it’s a versatile look that you can swap out one piece and it will transform you from day to night. I am going to wear my dark denim Levi super skinnys, with my black chiffon tank and my new panama style wide brim fedora, and some sandals. Of course you already know layers upon layers of gold and silver bangles and my long pendant horn style necklace, layered with my side ways cross. Casual, comfy and cool! If we end up going out for a night on the town, ill switch out my flat sandal for a wedge and pop on my olive military green jacket.

So when the weather is behaving, my absolute go to is a maxi dress! It’s like laying in your pajamas all day! That is literally perfect for any occasion. All you need to do is make sure the material and print are what your looking for. Cotton is the best because the material is so comfortable, it’s the lightest and most breathable. Not to mention comes in SO many styles and silhouettes. I love the halter style ones that have no back, or the ones that have intricate back details on it. Toss your hair in a bun and it takes your look from staple to sexy in seconds. Another reason why maxi’s are great- they can be layered with anything, short cardigans, jean jackets, blazers, chambray button downs, and even zip up hoodies for a casual night in. I love a maxi dress that is fitted in the bust and then loosens on its way down, allowing you to remain cozy all day long and not feel like you have to hold it all in!! Lastly, your maxi should be of course jazzed up with accessories. Long pendants, stacked short dainty pieces, earrings, rings, watches and bangles! Like I always say, stack em high! Rocking the boho look you can never have enough. Keep in mind if you are going to be wearing a maxi dress with heels, make sure the dress is long enough! There is nothing worse than wearing a maxi that hits at the ankles and a high wedge paired with it. Keep it long if your donning a heel, and if in sandals or flats, keep it to the bottom of the heels.

My next Memorial Day pick is the cut off short and billowy top. Something breezy and breathable on top is perfect for this weekend because its cool enough during the day and warm enough at night. You can play with your shorts so much, color, print, basic denim, destructed, the possibilities are endless. I like peasant style blouses or even a baby doll style top. Mix your prints, bust out the paisleys and florals and make it a staple look! Adding a fedora or a wide brim hat will make the outfit come off as more cool and casual, giving you effortless fashion. Stack your bangles on a chunky watch and a cocktail ring to top it off.

Going on a boat this weekend? Or even a pool party? It’s all about finding the perfect swim suit! One pieces are having a moment- and what better moment than for this weekend. I have fallen in love with so many one pieces I want them all, but I don’t want the tan lines! There are so many choices out there, one great website to find a slamming one piece at an affordable price is Asos. I think I have about 12 in my want list. My favorite style one piece is the retro inspired suits, they look amazing and have the flattering corset style top so that it gives you just enough push where you need it. Anything that is color blocked, has a tie at the waist line or even a faux belt is so flattering for any silhouette. It gives you the curves and the confidence of Marilyn Monroe. Of course you will want something to go over this so opt for a sheer beach tunic, or a sheer linen pant and a loose top. If you go the two piece route, find a cute sheer neck scarf and tie it at the waist loosely, like your walking on the beaches of Jamaica. Go island inspired and wear a fun hair accessory or flower to keep you looking fresh. Of course a wide brimmed sun hat would be killer for this look, it all depends what kind of party your going too. A must needed accessory for this is your sunnies! You can’t be out basking in the suns glory without your sunglasses, and these should be your main attraction, ladies. I love the cat eye sunglasses, or the 60’s circle frames that look like John Lennons signature pair. There are so many out there ranging from 4.99 at Forever 21 all the way up to the hundreds, depends on how designer you are willing to go. So put on your favorite party suit on and get ready for the sun!

Enjoying a casual night in with the girls or the boyfriend? Rock your favorite graphic tee or tank top with some ultra comfy sweats. Talk about being comfortable at its finest! You can throw your hair up in a top notch bun, put on your Rolling Stones Henley and some VS Pink yoga leggings. You are with your besties so be as cozy as you want! Curl up with a bottle of vino and some quality bonding time and you have yourself a certified R&R!

A key look for any weekend is the little cotton dress. Hits mid thigh, strapless, racer back, halter, or any sleeve variation is perfect. I love the soft cotton dresses from Target, Kohls, H&M, Forever 21 etc. You can find them in millions, shapes, sizes, silhouettes. I love something that has an open back or a plunging front, but isn’t fitted. Something that looks sexy but doesn’t scream skanky. The best silhouette is a circle skirt like bottom and a fitted top. Like a baby doll style. Add on crochet details, a cognac brown wedge and a fringed bag and your out the door!

My last go to outfit is denim and a tank top. Again- so many variations of this look, you can dress it up as fancy as your want or dull it down to as casual as you want. I love my Rock and Republic stone wash flare leg jeans. It’s the most classic pant and I find in times of an outfit crisis I throw them on as my safety pick! Pairing it with a cute striped or printed open back tank top, or even a soft casual tee shirt looks great. I pair mine with my olive v neck, my printed Thailand prayer scarf and pops of turquoise in my jewelry with gold and I am good to go. Go dressy and throw a wedge on, with a peplum tank. Don a flowing tube top, or a racer back tank if your in between two different feels. Again, pair it with the right accessories and details and this look will feel as effortless as your weekend ls!

Now as far as your shoes/ sandals go, go with what is comfortable! If your doing a lot of walking and moving around, wear a strappy flat sandal. Planning on sitting by the pool? Wear your wedges and make those legs look sky high! If your keeping it casual a peep toe wedge sneaker, chucks, or braided sandals work best. Try out your options and see which ones you feel the best in, that’s all what it’s about after all. Be the best you!

Below are images of my go to outfits and ideas for your Memorial days weekend. Jazz it up, dress it down, and live it up- have fun putting your outfits together, get creative and break outside your box! But most importantly be comfortable and dress for the right occasion! Don’t over think it, you want to be natural and feel natural, go with your gut and trust that inner fashionista who is itching to get out!
